Richard Bevins chemical analysis and paper of Orkney Stones has not looked in detail at the two sample stones that were sent to them via you. The samples were from Westray and Papa Westray which are not from the Lower Stromness Flagstone ie Mainland Orkney. If the samples collected by me were analysed in the same way I am convinced that they would show a match with the Altar Stone. It was a missed opportunity to get the correct match. Within the paper the text says the Stenness samples confirm that the Orkney Stone has not originated from MAiNLAND oRKNEY, yet unfortunately the title of the paper is missing out on the word Mainland, so the public assume the results include samples were taken from all the Orkney Islands. On my research for the correct block I had dismissed the LOWER STROMNESS Flagstones and concentrated on the Rousay Flagstones which are found on the island of Rousay, Westray and Papa Westray. The surface patterning and purple colour match and blocksize are more pronounced on the Rousay Flagstone , the analysis of which was not shown in the paper. Can we encourage the Aberystwyth team to chemically analyse stones from Papa Westray ?
